John was our Lead Mechanic and Shop Supervisor for 21 years. I worked with John for many years while at the Egg Harbor Township Board of Education and he was a dedicated and caring individual. His job was to make sure the transportation department busing ran smoothly every day, and he did it well. From ordering the correct parts, making sure the mechanics all had the tools and equipment they needed, working with the bus drivers, scheduling which buses would be in for repairs and assuring that our bus fleet was always operating and safe for the thousands of our school children that rode them to and from school on a daily basis, and he did it all with pride. John was the first one in the office in the morning and the last one to leave every day after all our students were home safe.
I could never understand how he always remained so calm with everything he had to accomplish every day. I remember one day when the township was hit with a lot of snow and ice the night before. When I came in, John had already been at work organizing all the plow trucks. He had a large cut on his forehead and it was bleeding. I asked him what had happened, and he said he slipped on the ice and hit his head on a plow blade. His comment to me was, "don't worry about it, I hope I didn't damage the plow blade". That was John, a great guy with a sense of humor, a hard worker, and dedicated to the safety of our Egg Harbor School students We will miss you my friend.

To me he was Little John. He worked with my Dad (Mert Gardner) when I was little. My Dad would tell us stories about Little John and the not so good sense of direction he had. Many the times, Little John would call my Dad and say, "Where am I" and "how do I get to the job and then home". He had a great laugh, a sly look and was a great person overall. We couldn't wait until Christmas morning when Little John would call. Every Christmas, never missed, even when my dad had Parkinson's and really wasn't sure who John was, he remembered. Little John gave us our first puppy, Tippy, but after a while we had to give him back, he kept eating our house. The basement steps, the shingles, your name it, he ate. Little John was the best. I am going to miss him.

Sergeant DiMaio was a very hard working soldier and made things happen. He was very devoted and you could always depend on him to accomplish his mission. We were always glad to see John since he always had a great smile, a smile that would comfort and assure you. He was an essential part of our team.
John always had kind words for his brothers in and out of uniform. Devotion to his work, our unit and our country was the mark of John DiMaio.
It was a privilege to serve with John and we thank him and the DiMaio family for his service to our community and our nation we are very proud of him.
