Obituary of Vernon Minor

Please share a memory of Vernon to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Vernon Minor, a loving father and Grandfather, hard worker, and friend to all passed away peacefully, at home, surrounded by loved ones, on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, at the age of 85. Vernon was born in Six, West Virginia, to Elizabeth Moore and John Daniel-Minor on March 8, 1937. The first of 6 children born to Elizabeth Woods. Vernon loved to tell stories about his childhood. He would tell of the days he would ride his horse to school and spent hours feeding his horse apples and carrots while at lunch. If you were around him, you couldn't' help but to notice his left index finger was shorter than the rest, due to one day at lunch, children poked the horse and scared the horse, and the horse accidentally bit his finger. Instead of being upset at the horse, he was grateful that a partial finger was the only damage and always joked that by his finger being shorter and being his trigger finger, it kept him from being drafted into the service. After 8th grade, Vernon decided to leave school and help his family by getting a job while still in West Virginia. At the age of 17, his family moved to Brooklyn, NY where Vernon met his first wife Madeline James. No children from this union. Later he met Ethel Poyer and out of this union came his first daughter, Dawn Poyer. After that, he met the final love of his life, his wife Valerie Scott who already had 2 children, Maurice age 2 and Tyrone age 1, who he raised as his own. Out of this union came his daughter, Chanel and son Kevin. He was a man of many names, Mahaskis, Popcorn, Roy just to name a few. "POP" as he was affectionately known by his children, grandchildren, and many others loved to cook. While in New York, he started working at Unity Hospital in Brooklyn, in the kitchen as a pot washer at the age of 19. His hard work and dedication put him in prime position to be promoted to a line cook. At this time, he learned his passion for cooking. He was promoted to Chef and worked till the hospital closed after 19 years. He also was employed at St. John's Hospital for 5 years and was able to retire due to 24 years he put in at both facilities. Later in life, he decided to move to Newtonville, NJ to be close to his mother and siblings. He found employment at Green Briar Nursing Home as a Chef. He once again found passion of what he liked to do at Atlantic Care Medical Center, Mainland Division. He retired on February 12, 1999. After retiring, he continued with his passion by cooking for his children, grandchildren, and anyone else that wanted to eat. During his retirement, he moved to Senior Christ Care Unit in Sicklerville, NJ where you would find him in the hallways laughing and talking to his friends by the window. HE ENJOYED LIFE!!! Vernon was a giving person. He would often offer everyone something to eat and would give you the shirt off his back if necessary. He would always say, "HERE, LET ME LINE YOUR POCKETS WITH SOMETHING OTHER THAN LINT". Vernon was a proud Father and Grandfather that would often brag of them all! Vernon was predeceased by his mother, Elizabeth Woods; Father, John Daniel-Minor; Sister, Maxine Minor and son Tyrone Scott. He is survived by his daughters, Dawn Poyer and Chanel Graham (Marcus); Sons, Kevin Scott (Gillian) and Maurice Scott (Jazmine). He leaves behind to cherish his memories 3 sisters, Sonja Wheeler, Sheila Minor, and Dina Bond and 1 brother, Dywane Woods. He also leaves behind his special brother, Kelvin Bond; Sister Linda Mitchell, Sister, Betty Bryant and his favorite little buddy, Dilynn Washington, who was the food enforcer and fed him grapes and bananas. He will be sorely missed by his Grandchildren Robert Sap, Jr., Diamond Poyer, Rayshawn Scott, Malaysia Graham, A'Chay Graham, Kha'myla Graham, Cayden Graham, Messiah Graham, Maurice Garcia Scott, Jr., Zoey Scott, Ella Scott, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends. IN THE WORDS OF VERNON "POP" MINOR "ASHES TO ASHES, DUST TO DUST, THIS OLD MAN, HAS SHUT HIS FUSS" A viewing will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2022 from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM at the Carnesale Funeral Home, 202 S.
