Obituary of Rosa L. McKoy
Please share a memory of Rosa to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Rosa Lee McKoy "Sister" was the daughter of the late Pervis McKoy and Maxine McEachine; granddaughter of Verna McDougle "Granny". She was born December 15,1934. Growing up she was the youngest of two daughters, however, would later become the second eldest of twelve children.
Rosa Lee was born in Lillington North Carolina; she resided in other townships of Harnett County and Henderson North Carolina before relocating to Buffalo New York, she later moved to the State of New Jersey where she acquired residence in the townships of Newark, Hillside, and Hammonton where she lived until her earthly departure.
Mother McKoy was a precious Woman of God. She served on the Mother's Board and TrusteeBoard at Alpha Omega Fellowship with integrity. Mother McKoy's nurturing spirit and compassion for young people was always present. God gave her the vision to birth "AOF Mentoring" for the youth. It was her humbleness and love for children which made her a beacon of light wherever she traveled. The success and solidarity of the Mentoring Group impacted the youth members in various positive ways; including promoting "The AOF Praise Dancers" under the direction of Mother McKoy connecting with women shelters in the community where the dancers performed, and church mentors had the opportunity to connect and with families in need.
Rosa McKoy achieved a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Rutgers University in Newark, NJ; and received her Associates of Arts Degree from Essex County College in Newark, NJ. True to form Rosa maintained the Dean's List throughout her studies.
Rosa began her career as an Educator with the Newark Board of Education in 1967. Initially working as an assistant Teacher, she soon excelled to Lead Classroom Teacher. She taught grades Kindergarten, Third, and Eight Grade; however, for most of her 40 years of Teaching she taught Kindergarten by choice as she firmly believed the early age is most important in terms of reaching children creatively and instilling structure while laying the foundation for positive learning. Rosa McKoy taught at Oliver Street School and Dayton Street School both in Newark NJ. During her tenure at Oliver Street School, Rosa was elected as PTA President. She later formed the "Oliver Street School Coalition", serving the community and the needs of families and children. Rosa enjoyed hosting gatherings consisting of the teachers and students of different cultures. She sponsored activities such as: Cookouts in the park, Bus Rides to Amusement Parks, Beaches, Lakes, Picnic's, Sport Arena's, etc.…all to improve the lives of Families and Individuals; while promoting positive community engagement, growth and next level fellowships "Down- Neck" (The Ironbound Section). Later, Rosa organized the "Community Bicycle Club" inviting friends, families of the community every Saturday to come together and fellowship with one another while riding our bikes.
