Obituary of James Brown, Jr
James Brown, Jr. was born on November 10, 1944, to the late Sweeney Absalon Brown, and Bessie Graham Brown in Lake City, South Carolina, and he was one of ten children.
James received his education in the Philadelphia public school system, where chemistry was his passion.
He enlisted in the United Stated Army on June 1, 1963, and his love for chemistry continued as a Chemical Engineer. James retired from the military, as a Staff Sargent, on June 1,1983 after serving his country for twenty years.
Growing up in a Christian home, James accepted Christ at an early age and attended the Philadelphia National Baptist Church. James joined the Peniel Baptist Church where he served as a Trustee. Life changes affected his attendance, but his faith never wavered.
James met, and later married Mary Ann Burrell, which preceded him in death. From this union four children were born. Angie L. Brown, James Steven Brown, Shawnda Brown and Tanya Ayesha Brown. Angie L., and James Steven preceded him in death.
James was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
Later in life, James met Janice Williams, fell in love, and they became a long-term couple until his death. James admonished and cherished Janice's children: Antwanette Wyche, Bernette McFadden, Adrienne Pender, Isa Young, and her grandchildren: Elijah Simmons, Farrakhan Simmons, Masiah Frazier, and Great grandson Amir Simmons.
James enjoyed his family and friends, and had a special saying for his nieces, "I Love My Nieces to Pieces". He had a heart that led him to help and encourage others in many ways.
James was a member of the Scottish Rite and Prince Hall Masonic Orders.
James was an avid sports fan. He was deeply passionate about his Philadelphia Sports teams. The Eagles, the Phillies and the Flyers. He looked forward to watching them play. He also enjoyed going to the casino from time to time.
James went home to be with the Lord on December 8, 2024, and will be missed by his family and friends who loved him deeply.
James' siblings and their spouses that preceded him in death are: Janie Mae O'Bryant (Irvin), Jean Marie Pickett (Elliott), Joseph Jessie (Brother-In-Love), Issac Brown (wife Carrie Lou), and a brother that passed away as a newborn.
James leaves to cherish his precious memory: Two Sisters and three brothers: Rebecca Jessie, Sweeney Brown (wife Maxine), Dr. Betty J. Brown, Dr. Carl Foster Brown (wife Barbara), Zeno Brown (wife Loretha). Two Children, Shawnda Brown and Tanya Ayesha Brown. Nine Grandchildren, Latasha Brown, Shaun Brown, Shaquanna Brown, Sharnelle Brown, Tyrone McCloud (Ashley), Tyrelle McCloud (Lavelle), Trevant McCloud (Destiny), Xavier Nobles, and Ayanna Irvin. Nine Great Grandchildren, Shamarr Brown, Niyajaj Cunningham, Skylar Ali, Amir Ali, Raheem Hix, Rayheema Hix, Aria McCloud, Suri Nobles, and Ashton Nobles. Two Great-Great Grandchildren. A host of nieces and nephews, a host of great nieces and nephews, host of great-great nieces and nephews, a host of great-great-great nieces and nephews. The love of his life Janice Williams, extended family and friends.
A very special "Thank you" to Ron who was a very special help to James.
Memorial Services will be held Saturday, January 4, 2025, 12:00 pm at he Carnesale Funeral Home, 202 S. Third St., Hammonton, where a Visitation with family will be held from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm.
Burial with military honors will be held at Greenmount Cemetery.
