Rest Easy our friend, Billingsport neighbor & PHS fellow student. A kind person that will be forevermore remembered. Fond memories of watching his 4 years of PHS meets, as my brother was a fellow Varsity teammate. His brothers were always there- Gene was supported & loved by many! Thanks for all you gave to so many as a coach, & teacher. Kathryn PHS 70.

Dear Family of Coach Gene Barber, Friends of Coach Barber, and Absegami Wrestling Family: I was college roommates of an Absegami wrestler under Coach Gene Barber and teammates with him on the Ohio State Buckeyes wrestling team, Lawson Lipford-Cruz. Through him, I heard so many great stories of Coach Barber pushing your team to greatness, and I eventually met other wrestlers who were groomed by Coach Barber such as Carlos Maldonado. Please know that your family member and Coach made such an impact on wrestlers and on the sport of wrestling that this boy from Ohio knew about him. Stories like mine are probably common with Absegami with Coach Barber at the helm, but know that wrestlers wrestling in college is rare at other high schools. I believe that Lawson was able to wrestle at a Big Ten school because he had a legendary coach pushing him and a legendary team to workout with in a legendary state whose reputation precedes it in the sport of wrestling.
