Tony was not only Chief of the Boat, he was a friend to every sailor onboard. If you needed help Tony was there. If you needed a boot to the backside Tony was there. Those of us who served with him on USS John Adams Blue, knew him as shipmate and brother of the dolphin. Whenever and wherever we gather, he will be remembered and honored! Deepest condolences to his family, but know that he touched many lives and he will be remembered with pride and honor. Hap Newsom FTB2(SS), USS John Adams SSBN 620 Blue 1968-1973

Tony, the "COBFATHER" was the finest Chief of the Boat any CO could wish for. When John Adams won the "Golden Anchor Award" for best retention and training in the fleet, Tony was made Force Master CPO to take what won that award to SUBLANT. A wonderful friend, and a superb Chief of the Boat
We miss you COB.

Friends&shipmates:Tony Was our father figure A man of great love & authority who only had our best interest in mind when he handed out discipline or correction: Whether it be a slap in he back of the head or a pinch in the shoulders or neck.He was always there for us anytime any place,
Mu own memory will includemy hospital stay at Bethesda Naval Hospital(1976).Sitting in the lounge after a course of chemo. I was shocked out of my seat by a slap to the back of my head. Turning around there was "my COB father"I asked him "How he knew I was in here"His reply was word for word. "There isn't anything that happens on the East Coast that I don't find out about"That was my last meeting with Tony & I love him for it"Come to find out Cdr Peters had told him I was there and he came to cheer me up. Thank You.

A large gruff guy that had a soft heart. During an upkeep in Guam, Tony found another (RAT) dog as I called them just to tweek him. With a 6 mo quarantine in HI. he was concerned that the pup wouldn't survive. I spoke with a Vet. got the dosage for Valium for a 2 pounder. Almost made it to Pearl when the pouch woke in his liquor carry on box. The stew hear the pup whining, we knew we were busted. She took the pup loved him and passed him around returned him as we were getting ready to land. Customs was handled and Tony walked out with the pup(still in the liquor box) and a lot paler than when we went thru the check out.
The world was a better place with him here.

Tony was the father figure and friend who mentored and disciplined every sailor who served with him. He was my neighbor in Saco, ME and helped us with advice on our vegetable garden. I will miss his smile and advice. He tried to recruit me for the Ohio at Electric Boat. Be at peace Chief.

He will live in the memories we have of him. He was my uncle, but, with only 3 years difference in our age, he was my friend. He lived a few houses away, so he spent a lot of time with my Mom and me. I'm glad I have those years to remember. God bless and keep you safe Nick and Nataly.

Tony Balestrieri and I served in USS CAPITAINE in 1958 & 1959.
He was one of the nicest young men that I ever had the pleasure of working with.
As a ET3(SS) he was a better Electronic Tech that I was a an ETC(SS). We stayed in touch when he served in SEA DRAGON and I was in sister sub SARGO.
May God welcome a good man.

Tony, Bill and I tipped quite a few beers together. I tipped too many. I just remember laughing a lot as we teased other shipmates. He loved the Navy and was just a great guy. I was very proud to have served with him and am very saddened of his death.

J.A. Blue was where I got my submarine start & who better to see what "Ask the Chief" meant than Tony. A superb shipmate, but an even better friend to all the enlisted under his wings. Any member of the "Y-NOT" club has great memories of his leadership, cunning and laughs. Fair winds and following seas, Shipmate, you are truly one of the best the U.S. Navy & Submarine Force has known. Gary 'McNutterino' (every one had to have an Italian name) McNutt, STSCS(SS), CWO3.

Sharon Vaughan posted a condolence
Tony was a legend within the submarine Navy. The sailor of all sailors and unforgetable. I don't think I ever met a man who loved the Navy more. It was the Navy and Dee, Nick and Natalie. Our paths crossed within the Navy so many times. In Pearl Harbor, he lived a block from us, and when he got off patrol, he would drop by to see if my daughter and I were ok, and did we need anything. And he would tell us humorous "sea stories" of his most recent patrol. And we would laugh and giggle. The COB Father. Whatta guy.
