Mrs. Ruberton was the best. Until the day she died, she was a big part of my life, always keeping in touch and asking about my family. She was the kind of teacher you never forget - 35 years later I remember the things she taught me, things that are still useful today - and not just things from a textbook.
Her legacy lives in the thousands of us who knew and loved her. I told her just this year that whether she realized it or not, her influence will be felt for generations by instilling values in our lives as a wonderful teacher and friend.
In 1974, when I had her for the first time in fourth grade, my grandfather died, the first death I had in my life. I clearly remember her taking me aside and talking to me about what it meant to die and how it’s not the end of life, but a new beginning and leading our class in extra prayers for his soul.
It breaks my heart that I will not be able to say goodbye her at her funeral, but today I will go out to the bay off of Cape Cod and think of her as watch the birds soar above.

It can truly be said that Mrs. Ruberton had an impact on so many lives. She was my 4th and 8th grade teacher. Over the years, as I've reflected back on my school days, Mrs Ruberton always came to mind as one of my favorites. She had that special way of lovingly taking us under her wing- with just the right amount of sternness to keep us in line. Countless lessons were learned in her class; and while she laid a great academic foundation for us, it is the lessons about life, and how to conduct ourselves as proper Christian human beings that remain as her true legacy. While we can't hold these lessons in our hands as tangible things, we can pass them down to our children and to others, and that is the priceless part of her legacy.
Just last week in our local Minneapolis newspaper there was an article about a study showing that increasingly, todays teens do not have the special "role model" relationships with adults other than family, and what a loss it is in terms of life lessons and life enriching experiences. Immediately I thought of the specialness of a handful of adults in my childhood~ Mrs Ruberton included~ and indeed, in that moment I felt very lucky to have had her in my life.
I am truly sorry for your loss. Many prayers of comfort and peace to your family.

Ricky,
I was saddened to read of your Mom's passing. Having had her, not only as a teacher, but as a neighbor, she was extremely influential in my life for many years. Her famous chocolate cake and infectious laugh that came from her gentle soul, are some of the memories that I have of her. I will never forget the kindness that she showed to my Mom, for so many years. For those of us that were lucky enough to know her, our memories of her will linger forever. Take care my friend.

Dear Rick and family,
I was so sad to hear about your mom's passing. I once saw this quote, and I hope I get it mostly right...When we are born, we cry and the world rejoices. We should then live our lives so that when we die, the world cries, but we and the Heavens rejoice. And she did live her life that way, Rick! She was a great teacher, and she touched the lives of thousands of students! And, later on in my adult life, whenever I saw her, she always was so vivacious and funny and always had a kind word! I often saw her volunteering at the annual chicken BBQ at St. Martin's, too. I know she will be greatly missed by your family, but I hope you can find some comfort in knowing that she was loved by so many others, as well.
Truly sorry for your loss,
Ann Cicatiello
